Hill View Farms has played a prominent role in the Owensboro-Daviess County community for more than five generations. Owned and operated by the Gilles family, the 2,500-acre farm has evolved to feature a grocery store and butcher shop on the property.

Relying solely on the cattle they produce, the farm began selling beef products and individual beef cuts in 2013. One of the younger farmers in the family, Jim Gilles, led the charge to open the storefront in 2016 to offer three proteins and locally sourced dairy and produce.

“We offer beef, pork, and chicken raised on our farm,” Jim Gilles said. “Our store features Kentucky Proud products, seasonal vegetables, and a hodgepodge of other things. We take pride in growing agriculture in the community.”

The store began offering free-range pastured poultry four years ago. With the chickens and the eggs raised on the farm, consumers can expect to buy all-natural chickens produced with no antibiotics or growth hormones.

Gilles recognized a need in the community for consumers to be able to buy locally raised meat by the cut. They eventually obtained a USDA label and began selling their meat products at the Owensboro Regional Farmers’ Market.

“The only way people could buy local beef was to purchase sides of beef,” he said. “We still offer quarter, half, and whole sides, but we started doing individual cuts like the grocery store. Trying to provide a local, good, healthy product that’s high quality — that’s my passion.”

Gilles said support from the community plays an enormous role in their success, dating back to their humble beginnings at the farmers’ market.

“The Owensboro community has been great. The reception has been overwhelming, and the continued support has helped us grow,” he said. “We definitely appreciate what the Chamber of Commerce and community do to support small businesses and in growing agriculture in the area.”

The farm and store are located at 5024 Lee Rudy Road on the west side of Owensboro, just off U.S. 60. The store is in an old farmhouse with plenty of character and renovations that make it the ideal farm store.
