Owensboro Community and Technical College will host a pre-hire event for the new Commercial Driver’s License program on Wednesday, allowing employers an opportunity to meet prospective students interested in a CDL career.

The event will be at 9:45 a.m. in Room 5 of OCTC’s Downtown Campus at 1501 Frederica St. The event is open to any employer interested in sponsoring a student or students for CDL certification training.

Employers can participate in mini-interview sessions with the students to determine the right fit for their company. OCTC’s first cohort of students for its new CDL Driving Academy will begin classes on Nov. 8.

Companies interested in CDL certification for new hires or incumbent workers may be eligible for KCTCS-TRAINS funds, which will offset training costs significantly.

OCTC previously announced they were launching a CDL Academy in October 2021 to help address the driver shortage in the region.

Offered through OCTC’s Workforce Solutions division, this regional CDL driving academy is possible through a public partnership with the Owensboro Riverport Authority (ORA) and will offer both CDL Class A and Class B certification training.

The CDL Driving Academy will place a heavy emphasis on work-and-earn sponsorships, apprenticeships, and post-training employer placement along with a full range of free career navigator services.
