Armando Ortiz, owner of Real Hacienda Mexican Restaurant, is hoping to provide the Hispanic community with a new place to shop with a store named Latinus 1 Stop. Ortiz said he hopes to open the store, located at 636 Southtown Blvd., by Nov. 1.

Ortiz said the location will carry traditional Mexican ice cream and popsicles and other items. It will also have a bakery that will make fresh tortilla shells.

He said this will be important to the local Hispanic community because there are not many stores that provide the products those residents use. Ortiz said over his time in Owensboro he’s seen the Hispanic population grow, specifically over the last few years.

Even with the growth, he thinks there is a lack of the wider community having certain items that the Hispanic community uses.

“There’s a lack in offering the community all these kind of items [and] having them hot and fresh, like tortillas, ice cream, popsicles, street tacos,” Ortiz said.

While this store will benefit the Hispanic community — as Ortiz said they might have to travel to Chicago or Atlanta to get certain items otherwise — Ortiz said it’s not targeted only at the members of that community.

Ortiz said the store is expected to be open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day.
