The Spot Coffee and Finery is expanding its operations to feature a location inside Meijer on KY 54. The Spot, which currently is only located in Williamsburg Square, specializes in coffee and espresso beverages made from organic, fair-trade, and freshly roasted beans.

The new location is projected to open on May 15 directly next to Ben’s Pretzels, and owner Jacob Pendley is excited to bring the same level of service to the new space that’s made them so successful.

With the addition of a pastry chef, Pendley is also expanding the food menu for both locations.

“I’ve been looking at expanding and partnering with some form of box store for a couple of years now,” Pendley said. “I just happened to be shopping at Meijer, and I was coming through the check-out line and noticed the open space.”

Immediately intrigued, Pendley contacted the director, who put him in touch with the national director.

“I emailed the national director and told her all about my business and how long we’ve been in operation and gave her the whole spiel of what we’re about,” Pendley said. “She got back to me and said they would love to partner whit me. Meijer is one of the largest and nicest grocery stores in Owensboro – this seemed like the perfect partnership.”

Pendley added that the central location and proximity to KY 54 also made the site enticing. He said he expects to expand their target market with the new location and hopes the Meijer store frontage will also promote the current location.

“It’s a beautiful thing because I will be able to advertise this location and let people know we’ve got a single brick-and-mortar that has all sorts of cool hand-made items made by local people,” Pendley said. “That will hopefully bring more traffic over to this part of town … the more people that discover us, the better. Once people come in here, they fall in love with the place.”

Pendley has aspirations to grow even more down the road, partnering with the same roaster that’s propelled his coffee adventures to new heights.

“Her product is just amazing – she’s as passionate about her beans as I am,” he said. “She has 32 years of experience and sources only from independent and local farmers from each country. She also only conducts business with those farmers that practice sustainable agriculture, and she pays them well.”

Pendley also attributes their success to the community, adding that none of this would be possible without their support.

“It’s just been overwhelming – the amount of support we’ve gotten from the community,” Pendley said. “We wouldn’t be where we’re at now if it wasn’t for everything that everybody has said about us and all the returning customers that are passionate about what we’re doing here.”
