“Every vehicle deserves a spa day.” That’s the motto of James Ratliff and his team of specialists at Owensboro Auto Spa and Ceramic Coatings. Ratliff started the business in 2019, which offers the latest in detailing, protection, custom auto, ceramic coating, and window tinting services.
Ratliff is no stranger to the automotive industry, growing up in his dad’s mechanic shop on the corner of Frederica and 24th streets. His family was also active at Windy Hollow Speedway and operated NASCAR Pit Shop, a traveling truck that sold memorabilia at various NASCAR races.
“Cars are a major part of my background, and this business is a great way to honor my family,” he said. “We operate like a family and strive to create a family atmosphere. We’re laid back and always wanting to go above and beyond for our customers.”
The auto spa traces its humble beginnings back to Ratliff’s driveway, where cars often consumed several parking spots. His wife Karissa was impressed with the volume but discontent with the number of automobiles surrounding the house and suggested he “do something.”
In May 2019, he secured a small location at 914 Oglesby Street and started the adventure with only one other employee. Exponential success forced him to expand the current location and drastically increase his staff.
“Our goal was always to evolve into a one-stop shop, much like when you go to the spa to be pampered,” Ratliff said. “You get it all done in one place; that’s always been our theory. We can do any kind of customization from graphics and ground effects to stereo and audio system installs.”
The automotive detailing services feature interior and exterior options and range, beginning with a standard package and upgrades for premium and ultimate options. Ratliff is adamant about preserving the family and service-oriented vibe of the shop by catering to the needs of every client, regardless of their mode of transportation.
“All vehicles deserved to be treated like a Porche or a Lamborghini, which we’ve grown to do here,” he said. “We want to make your day better. We want your visit here to be a welcoming one and not intimidating. We want to better everyone’s day by providing superior service and a fresh and clean car that’s even better than when you bought it.”

Another way that Ratliff and company go above and beyond is by providing vehicle pick-up and drop-off services. They will visit your place of business, pick up your car, service it, and return it before the work day ends.
They also offer discounts to medical professionals, teachers, police officers, and other public servants. During the pandemic, they began providing auto-sanitizing services to medical professionals and law enforcement, a service they’ve continued.
Services are not limited to vehicles. Owensboro Auto Spa will detail everything from boats and motorcycles to ATVs and farm vehicles..
“This was my dream, my vision, and it’s just grown from there. We take a lot of pride in what we do. I hold all my guys to a very high standard,” Ratliff said. “The community has reacted positively to us, and we’re happy we can continue to provide a service and give back.”
