This coming Saturday will be the second time in the past two years Daviess County citizens will have the opportunity to dispose of their household hazardous waste free of charge. According to Director of Legislator Services, David Smith, the County applied for a grant two years ago that would allow them to host household hazardous waste disposal. As part of the grant, the State supplies three-fourths of the cost and the County supplies the other fourth.

Smith, who is also in charge of the solid waste department, said this is a wonderful chance for people to dispose of items in a safe location, rather than using their backyard, public landfill or having to arrange for a special company to travel from another city for pick-up.

“I think it’s an amazing thing we’ve started doing for the County,” Smith said. “Think about all of these things people don’t know what to do with…and they don’t belong in our landfill.

Smith said that in 2016, the County collected nearly 65,000 lbs of household hazardous waste with nearly half of the waste being made up of oil-based paint. There were also 3,000 lbs of pesticides, 5,000 lbs of oil and over three tons of antifreeze.

“This is a really good opportunity for people to clean out garages and utility closets,” Smith said. “The best news of all is that it’s free.”

A list of acceptable and unacceptable items for disposal is listed in the graphic:

Free Tox Away Day is Saturday, Oct. 27 from 8 a.m. – 12 noon at the Daviess County Operations Center at 2620 HWY 81, about one mile south of the roundabout. If asked, those utilizing these services may need to show proof of Daviess County residency, such as a driver’s license.
