Owensboro Christian Church reached beyond its New Hartford Road campus Saturday, sending nearly 300 members to volunteer across the community for its inaugural Serve the Boro campaign.

In what church leadership called a tangible way to show God’s love, Owensboro Christian chose five sites to focus their community service.

Fresh Start for Women provides low-cost housing and positive support for women trying to get back on their feet. Saturday nearly 50 volunteers helped with landscaping and removal of trees and satellite dishes at their Reid Road location.

Landscaping and painting took place at Oasis, a shelter for victims of domestic violence and at Estes Elementary School a new soccer goal was installed. The church supplied volunteer buddies at the Special Olympics and threw a free block party at the Boys and Girls Club for members and nearby Rolling Heights neighbors.

Over 300 volunteers began serving at 8 a.m. Saturday, with some staying at the five sites as late as 4 p.m.

This was the first volunteer project of this size the church has done in recent history. The seed was planted for Serve the Boro when church staff visited a church in Louisville that put on a similar event called Love the Ville. But when a family joined Owensboro Christian from that same Louisville church, Serve the Boro officially took root.

“It was just incredible to see church members of all ages and walks of life come together to be the hands and feet of Jesus for one common goal — to take church off campus and show the city of Owensboro the love of Jesus,” said Kegan Dewitt, elementary minister at Owensboro Christian.
