Castlen Dog Park is expected to be up and running by mid-summer, says community volunteer Pattie Martin.

Although there have been some minor issues regarding weather and water-saturated grounds at Legion Park, where Castlen Dog Park will be located, Martin said things are moving forward and expects that summer will present less weather-related issues than spring. The City of Owensboro also decided to move the dog park over 15 feet due to technical issues beneath the ground, which held things up a bit.

Steve Castlen, for whom the dog park is named, said fences and gates should be installed by June.

“Everything is right on schedule,” Castlen said. “We’re very pleased the City is working with us and Amanda Rogers [Director of Owensboro Parks & Recreation] and Pattie Martin right on schedule.”

Martin said the City’s contractors will be pouring the concrete for the dog park very soon. While Martin believes a mid-June opening is likely, she said she will know more after a meeting this Thursday with the Owensboro Parks & Recreation department.

“That’s one of the most important steps in the process,” Martin said.

After the next phase is complete, the dog park project will be out of funds, Martin said, so donations are still being accepted from those who want to support Castlen Dog Park.

Checks can be made to Owensboro Dog Park Association and dropped at the Castlen Realtors, located at 2839 New Hartford Rd. For more information, visit the Castlen Dog Park Facebook page.
