The Kappa Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa is hosting a fundraiser yard sale Saturday, June 1 from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 2117 North Stratford Drive.

This proceeds from this yard sale fund the international organization formed by women educators in 1947.

The Kentucky Kappa Chapter was formed in June of 1963 and has 23 members, three of whom serve in state or regional offices of the organization — Gena Richardson, KY VP for Membership; Elaine Williams, Western District VP; and Cathy Burden, KY Sergeant-at-Arms.

The yard sale fundraiser began in 2015 at the home of Kappa sister Alice Brauns and her husband Bill. It was so successful, it has been held on their lawn each year since.

For the past 20 years, Kappa Chapter has raised money to help local students pursue their goals of becoming teachers, said Kappa Chapter president Cathy Burden. The scholarship is given locally and interested students go through an application process.

“Our recent scholarship recipients include Katie Beth Blandford who is now a Kappa member and teacher in Owensboro Public Schools, Meredith Payne, a new English teacher at Daviess County High School and a pledge for Kappa 2019, and Z’Naja Talbott, a 2019 Owensboro High School graduate who will attend the University of Louisville in the fall to become an elementary teacher,” Burden said.

Prior to 2015, Kappa Chapter raised funds for scholarships through an annual Christmas auction.

“Members would bring in homemade treats such as pimento cheese, bourbon balls, layered cakes, and fudge or they’d contribute handmade items like scarves or quilts for auction,” Burden said.

She said members would look forward to purchasing specific items from certain bakers, and they made “quite a bit” from that fundraiser but, over time, the members decided to change the event to meet the needs of the community.

Burden said the chapter’s local altruistic focus this year is Cinderella’s Closet and they have collected money for the organization all year long. For Kentucky’s AΔK altruistic project, they raise money for “The Longest Day” for the Alzheimer’s Association.

Thanks to the generosity of Kappa members and their families, a wide array of items are available for sale from furniture and glassware, to designer clothing and toys, to shoes and knick-knacks.

“If we don’t have it, you probably don’t need it,” Burden said.
