In a media release sent late Tuesday, the Owensboro Board of Commissioners and Gulfstream Commercial Services, LLC announced the ceremonial groundbreaking and unveiling of “Brio,” downtown’s newest revitalization project.
The City and Gulfstream held a press conference in mid-April announcing the project, which will include a new 120-room hotel and the first large-scale downtown apartment endeavor, Riverfront Brio Apartment Homes, housing least 160 units. The project will also include a 400-space parking garage and is expected to open in late 2021.
Gulfstream is expected to reveal the hotel brand during Wednesday’s event.
Jack Wells, development partner of Gulfstream’s Matt Hayden, told Owensboro Times at the April press conference that the hotel flag had been negotiated, but they were honoring the company’s request to not disclose the brand at this time. Wells hinted to expect national name recognition. He said while the parent brand already has a home in Owensboro, the sub-brand will be new to the community and offer a different concept than other local options.
Also during the unveiling, city officials and Gulfstream representatives are expected to reveal a rendering of the project.
Prior to the April press conference, Riverfront Brio, an affiliate of Gulfstream Commercial Services, received unanimous from the Board of Adjustment for their project to go as high as 15 stories. Gulfstream officials have not yet confirmed the building’s height, but have said it will be between 12 and 15 stories.
The groundbreaking will take place at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the 500 block of West Second Street, directly across the street from the Owensboro Convention Center. According to the release, those that wish to attend can enter the construction site from Locust Street. In the event of rain, the event will be moved to the lobby of the Convention Center.
