Despite an overabundance of rain and a fencing issue that set back the opening of Castlen Dog Park, officials say the dog park will open this summer.

Progress on the dog park is moving along at a quick pace as the rainiest days of summer seem to have slowed. Green fences have been installed, separating the dog park area from the rest of Legion Park. An extremely spacious circle is divided down the middle by the same fencing material to create two separate areas for leashed and unleashed dogs.

“Now the concrete work has started and will continue through next week,” said Castlen dog park volunteer Pattie Martin.

The concrete Martin refers to has been poured in front of the two entrances to Castlen Dog Park as a welcome mat of sorts, creating a platform about 2-3 inches off the ground.

Martin said her best estimate for the opening of Castlen Dog Park is mid-to-late August.

“That’s a best case scenario,” Martin said. “We are closer than ever.”

As the countdown begins, Martin said dog park officials are prepping several giveaways and goody bags for opening day.

“If anyone wants to promote dog-related services, we are accepting promo items,” Martin said. “We are really hoping for everything to come together in the next few weeks.”
