The Senior Community Center is inviting members of the community to help recognize seniors ages 60 and older for their contributions by nominating them for the center’s annual Silver Salute Awards Program.

The program, which is the center’s main fundraiser of the year, recognizes individuals nominated in four different categories at a dinner that will be held Thursday, August 15, at Immaculate Parish Hall. The evening will feature a catered meal, musical entertainment, a silent auction and a special performance by Theatre Workshop of Owensboro. The fundraising goal for this year’s event is $30,000

“We host our annual Silver Salute program to benefit senior citizens of Owensboro-Daviess County and the surrounding area — there are so many ways our seniors impact our community,” said Senior Community Center Executive Director Dana Peveler. “By engaging everyone in making these nominations, we raise awareness and get to see all the wonderful ways these extraordinary people are making a difference in our community.”

Nominations for the Silver Salute Awards are due to the center by 4:30 p.m. Friday, July 13. Nominees and winners will be recognized at the dinner.

“We want the community to nominate those they recognize as having made a significant impact in these categories because who knows better how they have impacted the community than the very members nominating them?” Peveler said.

The eligible categories for nomination are in the areas of education, faith and inspiration, as well as the prestigious Elizabeth Munday Award.

The Silver Salute Education Award will be presented to an individual age 60 or older who has made a significant contribution to others through his or her work in the field of education. This award will honor those who have enriched the lives of others through the gift of teaching or education by any definition.

The Silver Salute Faith Award will be presented to an individual age 60 or older who has made a significant contribution to others through his or her faith community. This category will honor those whose lives exemplify the ideals of their spiritual creeds.

The Silver Salute Inspiration Award will be presented to an individual age 60 or older who has made a positive difference in the life of another person as a family member, friend, professional mentor or in any other capacity. This category will include those who have served our country through military service.

The Silver Salute Elizabeth Munday Award will be presented to an individual of any age who has made a significant contribution in supporting or celebrating seniors in Owensboro-Daviess County. This award honors the legacy of the late Elizabeth Munday, who was instrumental in the creation of a senior center dedicated to providing services, support, resources, learning opportunities and activities for people age 60 and older in the community.

Tickets for the dinner are $35, although nominees will be able to attend as special guests. Tickets can be purchased in advance at the Senior Community Center at 1650 W. Second St. between 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. or at the door the night of the event.
