The Apollo High School cheerleaders are sponsoring a self-defense class for women on Sept. 26. Josh Hayden, owner of Gracie Owensboro, which provides certified training in areas such as jiu-jitsu, will be leading the class.

Apollo cheerleading coach Wes Nall said the idea for holding the class actually originated with one of the parents in the program.

“Misty Smith, whose daughter is a junior cheerleader, has a younger son who takes classes at Gracie of Owensboro,” he said. “Unfortunately, in the world in which we live, one must always be prepared for the possibility of running into another individual who has the intent to do harm.”

Nall said while he doubts anyone will leave this class prepared to fight in a mixed martial arts contest, he said there is value in having the confidence that comes with knowing how to defend oneself.

Cost is $20 for adults and $10 for students. Advance registration is not required. Those attending should wear comfortable clothing and shoes.

The class which is from 6 to 8 p.m, is in the Apollo gymnasium located 2280 Tamarack Road.
