The Farmers’ Almanac predicts it is going to be a hard winter for Kentucky. Low temperatures, freezing weather and snow are all in the long-range forecast.

The Farmers’ Almanac provides 16 months of weather forecasts for the U.S. and Canada and is watched closely every year.

“Our extended forecast is calling for yet another freezing, frigid, and frosty winter for two-thirds of the country,” Editor Peter Geiger said.

According to the Farmers’ Almanac’s winter prediction, the coldest outbreak of the season should arrive during the final week of January and last through the beginning of February.

Clint Hardy, Daviess County Extension Agent for agriculture and natural resources, said while he doesn’t know the historical accuracy of the Farmer’s Almanac, he does know harsh weather can affect local farmers.

“Typically super cold winters make it tough (on farmers),” Hardy said. “It reduces days to work outside and complicates machinery operations.”

He said snow is typically not a problem unless it causes power failures requiring the need to manage generator power.

The western part of the country should see near-normal temperatures throughout the winter season.
