The Owensboro Twisters have been making balloon creations for the community for more than 10 years and are looking for volunteers to join their group.

Leigha Taylor, executive director of the Boulware Mission said, “The Twisters are an important partner of Boulware Mission, donating every penny raised twisting to the mission.”

The group began in 2007 and since 2010 the group made a deal with the Boulware Mission if they would buy the balloons they would donate all their profits to them.

Since 2013, the Twisters have given more than $80,000 to the Boulware Mission.

Richard Thomson, Owensboro Twisters organizer, said they are in need of more volunteers as their schedule is constantly booked full.

“There is only one original member of the club still twisting — Sue Bartlett,” he said. “Over the last six years, we have had anywhere from six to 12 members. So far this year we have twisted at 47 gigs and have 23 requests for September – October.”

Between 2013-2018 the Twisters were at 587 gigs throughout the community.

Thomson said everyone is encouraged to join, even those with no twisting experience.

“No previous experience of balloon twisting is needed to join our club,” he said. “In less than 30 minutes we can teach you to make the three most popular balloons — dog, sword and flower.”

The Twisters are out in the community at events like Friday After 5, the Owensboro Air Show, church and company picnics, local festivals and even wedding receptions. The Twisters ask for $50 for each hour of twisting. They also have a tip jar which encourages the community to give — all which goes to the Boulware Mission.
