The Gold Star Families Memorial Monument will be unveiled during a dedication ceremony at 1 p.m. Tuesday. Located at 119 E. Veterans Boulevard, the monument honors Gold Star families as they continue to endure the loss of their loved ones, and it is a place for the community to honor and remember the fallen.

The ceremony is open to the public, however, guests are encouraged to follow social distancing guidelines and wear a mask for their safety. The ceremony will be streamed live on Facebook @CityofOwensboro.

“Once again our wonderful community has gone above and beyond expectations to provide this monument honoring the families who have lost a loved one in defense of our freedom,” Mayor Tom Watson said.

The Gold Star Families Memorial Monument is a two-sided tribute made of black granite. One side bears the words “Gold Star Families Memorial Monument, a tribute to Gold Star Families and Relatives who sacrificed a Loved One for our Freedom.”

The other side tells a story through the four granite panels: “Homeland, Family, Patriot, and Sacrifice.” The scenes on each panel are a reflection of the community’s Gold Star families and their fallen heroes.

At the center of this tribute is a silhouette of the Loved One who paid the ultimate sacrifice in the name of Freedom.
