The Anderson Christmas Trees lot is open for business once again. Though their operation isn’t nearly the size it used to be, the family-owned business is ready to provide hundreds of real, fresh trees for the Owensboro community.

The operation, which has served the area for nearly six decades, is located in the front parking lot of Wesleyan Park Plaza off Frederica Street. Richard Anderson started the business in 1960, and it is now run by his sons Kurt and Keith Anderson with help from Kenny Conder.

They are typically open from about 9 a.m.-8 p.m. daily through the week, and “until they quit selling trees” on weekends. They’ll also be open Thanksgiving day from about 12:30-8 p.m.

They have between 700-800 trees this year. Only personal checks and cash are accepted.

Tree varieties include Fraser Fir, Scots Pine, Concolor Fir, Blue Spruce, and Vetch Balsam. Sizes vary from 6-15 feet depending on the tree type. All of the trees are grown in northern Michigan.

Keith Anderson said they keep things simple, trying to just provide a quality product year in and year out.

“We’re not out here to sell everything in the world — just Christmas trees,” he said. “All we want to do is give people in Owensboro a good, premium-grade Christmas tree.”

Customers can also get custom wreaths made fresh from trimmings at the lot.

Anderson said it’s always fun when people come out who have never had a real tree.

“It’s always fun when they’ve got kids who have never had a real tree,” he said. “When I was a kid, you never saw artificial trees. We’d go through four or five times as many trees as we have now.”

Prices vary by tree type and size. Anderson said they try to keep the prices reasonable so they can keep their family legacy going.

“We try to keep our trees at as minimal cost as we can to still be out here next year.”
