Owensboro High School is more than halfway to their goal after the first day of their canned food drive, which ends today. All donations will go toward Owensboro Police Department’s Operation Santa food drive.
OPD has held its Operation Santa food drive for the last several years, packaging and delivering 300 boxes of food to families in need across the city.
Roughly 400 cans each of corn and green beans were donated at OHS Thursday. Donations can be dropped off in the back parking lot of the OHS North Gym from 8 a.m.-2 p.m.
OHS Family Resource Coordinator Chris Covington said the school was hoping to receive at least 600 cans of corn and green beans.
During a normal year, Covington said, OHS would hold a competition throughout the high school to see who could donate the most canned goods. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, this year’s food drive was a drop-off event that took place outdoors.
Despite that, Covington said he was impressed with Thursday’s turnout and the number of people who took time out of their day to donate to a good cause.
“If we’re trying to get 300 cans of each per day, we’re at least on track, and maybe a little bit ahead,” he said.
