Three jail deputies recently received Lifesaving Awards for the heroic actions they took during an incident that involved an inmate in severe medical distress at the Daviess County Detention Center. Deputy Thomas Lane, Deputy James Barkman and Sergeant Shawn Longest were commended for their efficient and lifesaving efforts in responding swiftly to a man who was found not breathing during a cardiac arrest.
On Aug. 11 around 4:30 p.m., an inmate at the Daviess County Detention Center fell to the floor inside of their cell without any warning.
Deputy Thomas Lane, Deputy James Barkman and Sergeant Shawn Longest immediately responded and assessed the man’s medical condition. They were unable to find a pulse and determined the subject was not breathing.
“They began rendering life-sustaining medical aid, which included CPR,” said Jailer Art Maglinger. “On-site medical personnel also assisted them in their life-sustaining efforts until EMS and other first responders arrived at the facility.”
The inmate was transported from to Owensboro Health Regional Hospital in apparent critical condition. The inmate, who it was determined had suffered from a cardiac arrest, made a full recovery and was medically discharged several days later.
“Therefore, these prompt actions by Sergeant Longest, Deputy Lane and Deputy Barkman aided in saving this inmate’s life during a medical emergency,” Maglinger said.
For their actions, the trio was honored with the jail’s Lifesaving Award. re commended for their outstanding efforts, which bring credit both on themselves and the Daviess County Detention Center.”
Maglinger said he is convinced the man would not have survived without the deputies’ and medical personnels’ quick actions taken that day.
“You hear people talk about being in the right place at the right time, and that is certainly the case with this incident,” Maglinger said. “Many times, deputy jailers do not receive the level of public recognition they deserve because of their hidden service behind the walls. These deputies serve in a very challenging and unique role, which is vital to the public safety of our community.”
