Editor’s Note: Owensboro Times has partnered with some local organizations to provide a look back at 2020 and a look ahead to 2021. Today’s messages is submitted by the Daviess County Public Library.

On behalf of the library staff, our board of directors and the Friends of the Library, thank you! Thank you for continuing to support us during these unprecedented times.

When we originally had to close last spring, our amazing staff sprang into action, thinking of new creative and innovative ways to bring you, our clients, the services that you utilize on a daily basis. With their hard work and ingenuity, we were able to fill item requests with curbside checkout, our programmers worked tirelessly on creating content that we could share on our various social media platforms, and they also worked hard on creating DIY take-home kits.

We increased our budget for our catalog and were able to increase the number of holds, and items that were checked out per user. Use of digital services like Hoopla, Overdrive and Libby, allowed for clients to check out music, movies, audio books and more. We have provided the opportunity to check out WiFi hotspots to help those without the internet to stay connected, and we currently have placed an order for more so that we can help serve a larger population.

Our marketing team has worked endlessly on keeping the public informed of our ever-changing pandemic policies, as well as promoting all of the great services and programs we were able to provide during this time. And we feel incredibly blessed that we were able to provide Thanksgiving meals for over 20 families in our community.

We know that the last year has been hard, but we know that the vaccine brings forth a new hope. And it is our hope that we will be able to provide you with great experiences this year. We cannot wait to get back to business as usual. We miss hearing the kid’s laughter in our children’s programs, and we miss the group of gentlemen that meet in the Kentucky room to read the paper and catch up.

We are so happy that we were able to stay connected during this time, and we look forward to what 2021 holds.

Thank you and have a Happy New Year.

From Erin Waller
Executive Director
