Editor’s Note: Owensboro Times has partnered with some local organizations to provide a look back at 2020 and a look ahead to 2021. Today’s messages is submitted by the Wendell Foster.

Last year brought many opportunities to Wendell Foster.

We provide residential care to those with developmental disabilities. With safety measures in place, our residents have not had visitors inside of their homes for nearly a year – including family and friends.

We also provide outpatient care to over 600 people a year, which was interrupted early in the year. Our team of “Difference Makers” have been resilient and have kept our residents safe and in good spirits. We have been able to conduct limited visitations safely outside and our outpatient therapists have integrated telehealth therapy into their daily schedules.

As a nonprofit, 2020 caused us to be creative. Our Special Needs Expo and First Responders BBQ were both canceled. Our fundraising benefit dinner was canceled – an event that historically generates $130,000+ in one night. Additionally, the Wendell Foster Half Marathon, an event with participants from more than 20 states, was switched to a virtual format. We redirected our efforts and successfully had a COVID-safe golf scramble, we held our first holiday raffle, and ended 2020 with a successful Giving Tuesday and holiday fundraiser.

We are optimistic about the future. We are hopeful that our circumstances may change, but confident that our mission will always be the same – to empower people with disabilities to realize their dreams and potential. Our supporters, friends and the community have been there for us every step of the way and are making a difference in the lives of those we serve. We believe if we stick to our mission, that support and generosity will continue, and for that, we’re grateful. We could not do it without you.

From the 2,000+ people we support each year and our 350+ employees, Wendell Foster thanks you. Thank you for always being there and showing us that our community is made of “Wendell Foster Difference Makers.” With you on our side we’re confident our best days are yet to come. Thank you and Happy Holidays!
