The District Light

Mile Wide Beer Company is releasing a new beer made and named specifically for the City of Owensboro. The American light lager — named “The District Light” — will be available on tap and in cans starting Thursday.

The Louisville-based beer company recently opened a new taproom at 119 E. 2nd St., and co-founder Scott Shreffler said the new beer was inspired by downtown Owensboro.

The District Light will be served on tap and in 16-ounce four-packs of cans.

Shreffler said his team is excited to be working on this project and to bring a unique beer to Owensboro.

“When we first announced that we were opening a taproom in Owensboro, we heard a lot of folks say that we had to have a light lager of some sort of tap,” he said. “Being a brewery taproom, having someone else’s beer on tap just didn’t feel right to us. So we decided to brew our own version of the American light lager.”

In 2019, the City of Owensboro established “The District” — which allows patrons to carry open containers of alcohol purchased by select restaurants and bars within specific boundaries downtown.

“What the city has done, in creating The District and investing in downtown Owensboro as a destination, is special,” he said. “You don’t find areas like this in very many cities. We can’t wait for folks to be able to wander around The District drinking a District Light.”
