In the final hours before Valentine’s Day, Welborn Floral Company is opening a pop-up shop full of resplendent greenery in Wesleyan Park Plaza.

The pop-up is designed to be a cute and quick experience for the “last-minute shoppers” on the Friday and Saturday before Valentine’s Day, according to Sally Barker, Welborn’s event designer.

After talking to the business owners in Wesleyan Park Plaza, Barker wanted to boost mutual support among the Owensboroan-owned shops, such as Lance & Co. Jewelers, that cater to holiday gifting.

“It felt like a good idea to have a locally-owned florist to compliment the businesses already there,” Barker said.

In the ’90s, Welborn housed a shop on Frederica Street before finding a permanent location in downtown Owensboro. This will be the florist’s first attempt at a pop-up shop.

Welborn will offer flower arrangements in vases and small gifts, such as a unicorn-themed basket and balloon for young children.

Popular choices include the dozen red roses that are “by far our number one seller” Barker said, and the regal garden bouquet, which usually includes a mixture of hydrangeas, Bells of Ireland, tulips and roses. Welborn will include travel boxes that can be buckled into a car seat to avoid any spills.

The shop will only offer pre-arranged vases. Custom designs are managed at the downtown florist, whether for in-person shopping, pick up or delivery.

Valentine’s Day is naturally one of Welborn’s busiest weeks. This year, the florist will double its typically 22-person staff to 44 people to ensure successful supply and deliveries.

“It takes more people to make Valentine’s happen,” Barker said.

Welborn will open the pop-up shop on Feb. 12 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Feb. 13 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The space will be located in Wesleyan Park Plaza near Kidstop Children’s Boutique and Pure Barre.
