The H.L. Neblett Community Center on Thursday is hosting a virtual Home Buyer Empowerment Forum that will include a panel of local leaders answering questions and addressing concerns about first-time home-buying.

The forum will be held at 6:15 p.m. via Zoom and can be accessed through the H.L. Neblett Center’s Facebook Page. Questions may be submitted here. The event flyer also contains QR codes allowing access to the meeting and to submit questions.

Olga McKissic, executive director of the Neblett Center, said Thursday’s forum will discuss the benefits of owning your own home, as well as the skills needed to achieve personal financial security.

“We have to help educate the community on, ‘This is the first thing you have to do in building wealth,’” McKissic said. “A lot of people are scared [to buy].”

By bringing in a panel of local leaders with a variety of experiences, McKissic said the forum will give everyone watching the opportunity to see that home-buying is possible for anyone and everyone.

One of the panelists, Sheila Crowe, is a single-mother homeowner. Panelists Marshall and Allyson Sanders are first-time homebuyers, while Tina Forrest is a single homeowner.

Others involved in the forum include financial specialist Ron Burkins, local real estate professional Amber Taylor, moderator K.O. Lewis, and technical support Antoine Smith-Rouse.

Home-buying is so important, McKissic said, because it gives people the chance to build their credit and equity.

The forum is just one of the many events the Neblett Center is hosting during Black History Month, and McKissic invited everyone in the community to participate.

“Black History Month is for everyone,” McKissic said. “This event is for everybody.”
