Brescia University President Fr. Larry Hostetter said Thursday that as BU was struggling and trying to find a way to survive the pandemic, he noticed that the community was as well. However, he saw how innovative the community was in finding ways to continue on.

“I want to say how impressed and proud I am to be a part of this community, especially as I witnessed so many of you finding creative and unique ways to continue to serve your customers and clients,” Hostetter said during the monthly Rooster Booster event, which was held outside at the Owensboro Convention Center.

With the University, the pandemic reminded Hostetter the mission is to serve the students on a journey. He said this applies to students that cross the quad, the teachers in the classrooms, and staff that help the students succeed.

However, he said that the core of the work is found in the “DNA of Brescia” — which was founded by the women of Mount St. Joseph.

Hostetter had been raising money along with the students, faculty and staff at Brescia in honor of Sister Larraine Lauter’s work in providing clean water for those recovering from the earthquake in Haiti.

Hostetter presented a check to Lauter for her work.

Lauter, who was the event’s featured speaker said that while she is no longer in Owensboro, she notices the work that is put into the city by community members. She told a motivational story to inspire people on the ground level to pour into the work around them.

“This is the venue of the roosters, the venue of people making a difference by their vision and energy, their readiness to take on the world,” Lauter said.
