Western Academy at the H.L. Neblett Community Center has opened their registration for their program aimed to expand the horizons of African American male students in Owensboro.

The program is in its third year of operation and has expanded to accept 3rd- to 8th-grade students.

Executive Director Olga McKissic said the program is geared to “opening the eyes to what the world has to offer” the students and close the academic achievement gap in reading and math for boys of color.

“We pour into our scholars encouragement, empowerment and education and they in turn exhibit strength, stamina, kindness and success,” McKissic said.

There is a parent interest meeting tonight over Zoom at 6 p.m. and McKissic said all interested parents should attend to learn more about the program as classes are filling up. The deadline to apply is Sept. 24.

The program will hold its kickoff on Sept. 25 and being their sessions Oct. 16 at the Neblett Center.
