Owensboro’s Valarie Roberts, also known as The Etiquette Lady, will appear on an episode is season three of TLC’s 1000-lb Sisters. The show features sisters Amy and Tammy Slaton of Webster County, Kentucky, as they attempt to lose weight to qualify for bariatric surgery.

Roberts, who has taught etiquette classes for more than 20 years, said that a producer of the show reached out to her after finding her website.

“I got a call on my phone and it was from (Los Angeles),” Roberts said. “I almost didn’t answer it because I thought it was a telemarketer. I answered my phone and it was one of the producers from the show. He was interested in having me teach the girls an afternoon tea etiquette lesson.”

Roberts, who said she has watched 1000-lb Sisters since its first season, quickly agreed to appear on the show. She said that she wanted to put Amy and Tammy in a situation where they would have to use good etiquette; she decided that The Miller House in Owensboro would be the best setting for the lesson.

Amy, Tammy, and the show’s producers and crew met with Roberts at The Miller House on June 6 to film the episode. Roberts said that the filming lasted several hours.

“Honestly, (Amy and Tammy) were just like you see on television. They were authentic and they were very funny,” Roberts said.

Roberts has received certifications in etiquette from The Lett Group at Georgetown University and Etiquette Institute in St. Louis, Missouri, respectively. She frequently offers training and lessons in etiquette to schools and businesses in the community. Roberts said that her interest in etiquette initially began as a hobby; however, the history of etiquette and its origins led to Roberts turning her hobby into a career.

“There is a reason and a tone behind why we do what we do in the history of our customs in America,” she said. “I teach an authentic, English afternoon tea. I think they found it interesting and they definitely learned something new, as you will see on the episode when it airs.”

The third season of 1000-lb Sisters is slated to premiere at 9 p.m. Nov. 15 on TLC. For more information about The Etiquette Lady, visit thegoodmannersclub.com
