Members of the Daviess County Sheriff’s Office and Fire Department trekked 14 miles Wednesday morning, participating in the Law Enforcement Torch Run to bring awareness to the Kentucky Special Olympics.

The first Torch Run was held nearly 40 years ago in Wichita, Kansas, when the police chief there recognized a need to bring awareness to the local Special Olympics.

This is the 28th year DCSO has participated in the Torch Run, which is not a timed event. This year, four members of DCSO were joined by two members of DCFD.

“It’s to raise awareness for Special Olympics across Kentucky,” DCSO Sgt. Tyler Free said. “It’s just to raise awareness for all the hard work that they do every year and to support them in their Special Olympic Games.”

Those participating met at retired Sheriff Ketih Cain’s residence at 5:30 a.m. They traversed along US 60 West, Griffith Station Road, River Road, Ebach Street, Chesterfield Drive, Dublin Lane, W. 1st Street, Frederica Street, W. 3rd Street, and St. Ann Street before ending the trek at the Daviess County Courthouse.
