The Owensboro chapter of Sleep in Heavenly Peace recently delivered their 200th bed to a local child in need.

Child bedlessness is a national problem, and as a national nonprofit with chapters spread across the country, SHP has provided the solution. They are a volunteer organization that builds beds for kids who are sleeping on the floor.

According to Bruce Sheldon, president of SHP’s local chapter, their goals for the rest of the year are to build 80-100 more beds and get them to the kids that need them.

“As far as milestones go, 200 is just a good number,” he said. “All 200 of those beds were just as important as the others. We’re making a difference in these kids lives that I think they’ll remember.”

The group is planning their next build for Aug. 20. Those wanting to volunteer or take an even bigger part and join their team can call or message Sheldon at 270-314-3623.

“Around 2-3% percent of the population is what we’re told is the need,” Sheldon said. “So in Owensboro we’re looking at 1,200 to1,800 beds needed.”

SHP runs strictly off donations, which can be made on their Facebook Page or at shpbeds.org
