Beverly’s Hearty Slice will pass out 250 take-home meals from 5:30-7 p.m. tonight at Kendall-Perkins Park. The group regularly passes out pizza and water at three locations every other Friday, which will also proceed as planned.
Southern Star Central Gas Pipeline is the Thanksgiving event sponsor for the second consecutive year. Beverly’s Hearty Slice Founder Travis Owsley attributes the nonprofit’s success to God, the community’s support, and the many sponsors.
“I never saw us getting this big,” Owsley said. “All the glory to God. The community’s support, from volunteering to sponsoring, and several anonymous donors — it’s incredible.”
Owsley named the venture after his mother, who he said constantly welcomed people to her home for a meal. He said what separates Beverly’s Hearty Slice from other nonprofits is how they welcome donors and sponsors to participate in the distribution efforts.
“The community has just seen the good work happening and wants to be a part of it,” he said. “We’re one of the only nonprofits inviting donors to come to an event and witness the benefit.”
Along with the take-home meal and pizza, Pepsi is providing an assortment of products for free carry-out. The event also features a coat giveaway and performances by the Owensboro Symphony Orchestra.
Owsley formed the nonprofit in September 2020 at a time when positivity was scarce.
“I wanted to honor my mother’s memory; she was always so opening and giving,” he said. “People were struggling and getting laid off, and I was just looking for a way to spread a little hope and some positivity.”
With three locations thriving, Owsley is excited to expand into four different states next year.
Mark Gaunya, a successful entrepreneur in the healthcare industry, randomly bumped into Owsley at an airport last year. The two shared the same heartache: missing their mom.
Gaunya contributed $10,000 to Owsley’s efforts and kickstarted an expansion plan. The additional locations will begin operations next summer.
