The City of Owensboro is in the process of adding three more tennis courts to Merchant Centre Court, as well as resurfacing many existing courts.

Kerry Bodenheimer, Superintendent for Owensboro Parks and Recreation, said the addition will create the second location with 12 courts in the city.

Bodenheimer said the bigger complex is important for certain leagues and tournaments because they require a certain number of courts at a competition site.

The Parks Department is combine the new project with the resealing and restriping of existing tennis courts to put them all onto the same resurfacing schedule — which is typically every 5 years.

“By getting all of the existing 15 courts with the new courts under the new schedule moving forward for future years, that just makes it a much more seamless project than being on separate rounds,” she said.

The courts garner over 180 youth participants during the summer season and have generated $859,270 in 2022 alone from use by adults.

Assistant City Engineer Dirk Dooper said the total cost for resurfacing will be $578,000. The new courts are expected to be completed by the end of November.
