Audubon Area Community Services will soon begin offering financial assistance through the annual LIHEAP program, which is a federally-funded program to help eligible low-income households meet their home heating needs.
The LIHEAP (Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program) home heating program has two main components: Subsidy and Crisis.
The Subsidy component will operate November 7-December 16. It helps residents at or below 130 percent of the federal poverty level pay home heating costs for which they are responsible either by direct payment or as an undesignated portion of their rent. Benefit amounts for the Subsidy component will be based on the household poverty level and the type of fuel used for heating.
Applicants will need to provide proof of social security numbers or permanent residence card for each member of the household, proof of all household member’s income from the previous month, most current heating bill, statement from the landlord if heating expenses are included in the rent, statement from the utility company if participating in a pre-pay electric program, and the account number and name on the account for main heating fuel sources and electric bill.
The crisis component will operate January 9-March 31 2023, or until funds have been expended, whichever comes first. Clients must meet the criteria of the Subsidy component, and be in a crisis situation involving imminent loss of heating energy (applicants must provide a utility disconnect notice); have four or fewer days of fuel oil, propane, kerosene, wood or coal available; or have received an eviction notice citing unpaid rent (applies to applicants whose heating costs are included as an undesignated portion of the rent). Households at or higher than 75 percent of poverty level must pay a portion or co-payment of the minimum amount necessary to alleviate the crisis.
Applications must be completed in person in an Audubon Area local office listed below. Online applications will not be provided. If you need special accommodations in order to apply, or an address of your respective county office, contact your local Audubon Area office in the county where you reside.
