The Daviess County Fire Department raised $18,000 through their through their ninth annual golf scramble, with all the proceeds being donated to the Christmas Wish program.

Firefighters Will McCrady and Quinton Pence unveiled a check for $18,000 on Monday. DCFD Inspector/Investigator Keith Hurm said 32 teams participated in the event, a new record.

The 46th season of the Christmas Wish program is underway now, providing hope to families in need around the holidays.

WBKR personality Barb Birgy has served as the executive director of Christmas Wish for the last 7 years. She said more than 1,500 wish letters have been submitted.

Birgy said she is especially thankful for community partners such as the Daviess County Fire Department.

“There’s no words,” Birgy said upon seeing the check from DFCD. “I’m very rarely speechless, but I’m a little speechless right now because I know where that money is going to go and I know how many families are going to get the help they need. A lot of people don’t read the letters, they don’t hear the stories, they don’t know what these families are struggling with — and when you have a year this year where almost every letter says we need underwear, socks, pajamas, that says a lot about the need right now and what we’re dealing with.”
