Carol and David Ralph have been named winners of the holiday lighting contest hosted by Owensboro Municipal Utilities and the City of Owensboro Neighborhood Alliances.

They earned a $250 OMU gift certificate and a lighted sign announcing them as the winners. The Ralphs were also recognized at Tuesday’s commission meeting.

Anyone wishing to see the light display can drive past the Ralphs’ house at 2706 Redford Drive.

David said they began to really get into the light decorating spirit about 10 years ago, at which time he built his own box to control the lights and music.

“It’s just been kind of a passion to just make it bigger every year,” he said. “More neighbors are getting involved in it, but ours is the only one that’s anywhere close to what it is with the sound system setup and everything.”

The Ralphs have music that play along with the blinking light display. People driving by can tune in to 88.7 to listen to the music from their vehicle.

David said it was “kind of cool” to be recognized because his dad worked at OMU for years, David worked at OMU when he was in college, and Carol worked at OMU for a short time when they first got married.

The Ralphs did not enter the contest themselves, so they were surprised to win the award.

“This is pretty cool,” David said. “It’s not something we expected by any means. I don’t know who it was (that entered us into the contest), but I’m very appreciative of it.”
