Calumet Trace Senior Living, which officials said is a near all-inclusive facility on the luxury end of senior living in the area, has begun taking reservations and the three-story building is expected to open in the coming months. Calumet Trace offers rooms for independent living, memory care, and personal care for those 55 and older.

The facility is located on Calumet Trace behind the new Daviess County Middle School near Gateway Commons.

Officials said while the facility won’t officially be open until the end of May or beginning of June, they are currently taking deposits for rooms.

There are 115 rooms total, though some have already been reserved. The independent living section contains 51 units, while there are 44 personal care rooms and 20 memory care rooms.

Executive Director Justin Carwile said the independent units are like apartment-style living. That means there is no medical care but they can enjoy all the amenities and activities throughout the facility, and the residents are free to come and go as they please.

Carwile said while many think personal care rooms are the same as assisted living, there is an important difference.

“Assisted living is more of a social model with a little less medical care. Personal care is more of a medical model,” Carwile said. “Our caregivers can assist a little bit more in activities of daily living. We can actually pass the medications and administer medication — just as you would see in a nursing home as far as the medication side of it. Assisted living tends not to do that, they would just remind you for medications.”

Lastly, the memory care area is a portion of the personal care unit with a specialized focus. Memory care is a “secured” unit, meaning residents can move around within the unit but need direct supervision to access the rest of the facility or leave.

“It’s the same level of care as personal care, but it’s more focused on Alzheimer’s dementia,” Carwile said. “The activity program is also more tailored towards that.”Sales & Marketing Director Maleah Boisture ensured Calumet Trace is about more than what types of rooms and care is offered.

In addition to a full schedule of activities, the facility includes a full community kitchen with restaurant-style dining allowing residents to choose from a wide food menu. The facility also includes a bistro, courtyard, library, fitness center, craft and hobby rooms, a full-service salon, a chapel, and on-site therapy (physical, speech, occupational, and rehab). Calumet Trace will also have a facility bus to transport residents to appointments or to planned outings.

“We like to think of it as an all-inclusive resort type thing,” Boisture said. “Our mission statement is to enhance the human spirit, so not only do we want to enhance the spirit of our residents and upcoming depositors, but also to the community members of Owensboro.”

Carwile added, “This is definitely more on the luxury end of the senior living side of things. So we’re a little bit different than what’s already in Owensboro. Instead of having to drive to cities like Evansville or Bowling Green, we can have that right here in our home community.”
