The Issac Sterett Adventure Foundation’s first mission as a relatively new nonprofit organization is to help beautify Owensboro through “Operation Community Cleanup” on April 15. The event challenges groups to compete to pick up the most trash throughout the city, and already several teams have joined the cause.

Katie Sterett, President of the Foundation, said the event is family-friendly and teams can be formed of families, organizations, friend groups, or any combination of people.

“Being outside is what we’re all about. Connecting with other people, unplugging from our phones and media, and just getting the kids outside to do something good and service-oriented is the best,” Sterett said.

The one-day event begins at 7:30 a.m. on April 15. They will kick it off at the Foundation’s new building called the Center of Good Works at 1010 Allen Street (formerly home to The Centre for Business and Research).

From there, the pickup will spread to different areas in the community. Teams may also sign up for parts of town they think need some beautification. There is no limit to the number of people in a group or the size of the area the clean, according to Foundation board member Kyle Aud.

“It could be one person or it could be 100. So we encourage everybody to come out. The goal is to pick up the most trash as possible,” Aud said.

Trash pickup will go until approximately 11 a.m., when the winner will be announced. The winner will receive a trophy, and their organization’s name will be put on a plaque.

“It almost will have the feel of a race, but we’re racing to get the trash. So it’s a win-win-win for everybody involved,” Sterett said.

The vision of the Issac Sterett Adventure Foundation is to promote the well-being of the community through healthy life-balance initiatives. Sterett said that the Foundation is named in honor of her son, who died in a vehicle accident in 2020. Sterett described her son as an outdoorsman who was unafraid to try everything his mother signed him up for.
