The local observance of the annual National Day of Prayer is set for May 4 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the Daviess County Courthouse lawn.

Attendees are encouraged to bring a lawn chair or blanket if they wish to sit. In the case of rain, as was the case last year, the event will be moved to First Baptist Church’s sanctuary at the corner of 3rd Street and JR Miller Boulevard.

The observance kicks off with “A Circle of Good News” from 11:30-11:50 a.m, when attendees will quietly read aloud pre-assigned verses from the Bible so that by the end of the 20 minutes the entire Bible may be read aloud collectively. Attendees can pick up their “start-to-read-here” Scripture verse and instructions beginning at 10:30 a.m. at the flagpole on the courthouse lawn.

Those wanting to participate in the reading but unable to attend in person can still do so. Simply click here and send the page a message that you desire to be a reader, or text 270-929-8749.

The rest of the event will be a prayer/worship service featuring numerous church leaders and community members. Those who want to watch the event live or later can do so here.

Returning for the second year is a teen prayer night that will take place May 3. The teen prayer event will be a night focused on prayer, praise and worship. It is designed for middle and high school students/youth pastors. It will take place from 6:30-8 p.m. at Pleasant Valley Community Church (800 Pleasant Valley Road).

Organizers said all three public high school districts have approved their students attending this event. Contact your high school for their check-out policy.

A separate local event observing National Day of Prayer will be hosted later in the day on May 4.

The Owensboro Daviess County Ministerial Association will offer an interfaith event at 7 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Owensboro.

“We are pleased to resume this practice to include in praying for our nation an even wider group than can attend midday,” an email from organizers said. “We truly need every person of goodwill, of every faith and every practice.”
