The 7th annual Brandon Mullins Foundation’s Run to Remember 5K will be held May 29, and will begin and end at the Gold Star Memorial in Smothers Park. This is the first year the event is being held on Memorial Day instead of Veterans Day, although several events that are part of the run have previously been held on Memorial Day.

“People are excited,” founder Cathy Mullins said. “It will be warmer weather and will kick off the celebration of those who have died on the battlefield across the world.”

The event begins with check-in at 7 a.m. and an opening ceremony at 8 a.m. From there, several events begin – a 5K, ruck walk, flag walk and fun run.

The flag walk, where various members of the community carry an oversized flag, will begin at the Charles Shelton Memorial. The flag will be carried to the VFW and return to the memorial.

That’s different than years past, and the change was made so those who are doing the 10-mile ruck walk can head down Frederica Street to follow the route. Although the route will not be closed to traffic, there will be escorts.

“It’s pretty cool when you see those on the ruck walk with flags and some dressed in camo,” Mullins said. “You don’t have to have served to participate in that walk.”

The 5K will follow the same route as previous years.

“It is open to all who want to participate and have your day start by celebrating your freedom,” Mullins said.

While the event is hosted by the Brandon Mullins Foundation, Cathy said it is not just about Brandon.

“It is about several in our community who have lost their lives and to learn their names and remember,” she said. “Most people today do not have people in their families serving. But to have it here, locally, and hear what they went through … it’s kinda cool.”

For those interested in the 5K, registration is available online by searching Owensboro here. If registered by April 30, participants will receive a T-shirt as part of their $25 fee. The fun run is $5.

All events will begin at 8 a.m. at Smothers Park, 101 Veterans Blvd. For more information email [email protected] or call 270-316-9203.

The proceeds will benefit the Brandon Mullins Foundation and Veterans Empowered Together.
