The Daviess County Public Library is preparing to “Fly into Fantasy” with its summer reading program kicking off on Wednesday, with organizers saying there will be something for readers of all ages.

Taryn Norris, DCPL Assistant Manager and Children’s Librarian, said the program is open to anyone, regardless if they have a library card or are residents of Daviess County.

“Anyone, and that would include kids that are coming in town to stay with the grandparents for a few weeks, can participate in a program for a short amount of time. We really just want to encourage reading,” Norris said.

The program starts with its second annual kickoff party. For children, the library will have chalk, hula hoops, and other outdoor activities in the reading garden. Children also have a chance to win a free book.

There are also activities for teenagers in the public lounge, where they can make a dragon to complement the dragon-themed summer. Adults ca join the read-a-thon, and they can win a free bag.

Ever part of the program will be free for participants, Norris said.

Norris said the library has been participating in the program for roughly a decade. The program promotes annual readership in youth and combats the “summer slide.”

“We want to encourage kids and teens to keep reading because many times, there’s a summer slide when children and teens don’t focus on those reading and literacy skills over the summer. So by doing this free program at the library, they can get incentives basically for participating,” Norris said.

Throughout the summer, participants can log reading minutes — the more logged, the more chances they have to win additional prizes through the weekly drawings.

The kickoff party starts at 3 p.m. Wednesday and continues until 6 p.m.
