Under blue skies resided two yellow school busses at the local Wal-Mart shopping centers for the second year of the Daviess County and Owensboro Independent school systems, “Stuff the Bus.”

The idea came from Samantha Ray, a local REMAX realtor who benefited from a similar program when she lived in Tell City, Ind. She approached the two districts in a joint meeting with Family Resource Counselors. At that time no collaborative program existed, although several years prior ReadyFest had been the program for back-to-school supplies for the local family resource centers.

The committee chose the last Friday of July for this event and hoped the community would stuff the bus. Boxes were labeled for the different items to be collected and placed on the seats. The coordinators also created boxes for people who wanted purchased items to go to a specific school. Working in shifts of three, school and community volunteers accepted donations for 13 hours.

Tonya Barr, the Family Resource Counselor at Owensboro Middle School South and one of the coordinators said, “Wal-Mart did a competition between the two locations and identified how many school supplies were sold at each. Grab-n-go bags were already set up for people who wanted to purchase, but didn’t know what to get.” The Frederica Street location won the contest with over $15,000 of school supplies and products.
