Sorgho Elementary School is celebrating National School Lunch Week with special guests, activities and treats every day this week.

Monday, Oct. 15 – Local heroes from across the Daviess County community have been invited to the school as special guests. Members of the Daviess County Sheriff’s Office, Owensboro Police Department, Daviess County and Owensboro Fire Departments, representatives from military recruiting offices and Daviess County Public Schools district administrators will join students for lunch in the Sorgho Café.

“The goal of this event is to allow kids to interact with and get to know these heroes in a positive environment,” said SES food services manager Heather Haynes. “I also want to help kids realize the true meaning of ‘heroes.’ These days, kids associate heroes with how many YouTube subscribers someone has. I hope that by bringing these ladies and gentlemen to Sorgho, our kids will have a bigger picture of what they mean to us as a community and that giving back to our heroes is just the right thing to do to show how much we appreciate them.”

Tuesday, Oct. 16 – Sorgho Elementary School is hosting “Live from Sorgho” with Jeff Rhinerson, who presents weekly live Facebook videos across Owensboro/Daviess County.

Wednesday, Oct. 17 – Trivia Wednesday activities will make the lunch period fun and exciting – with a funnel cake bar as a special treat for SES students who eat school lunch that day.

Thursday, Oct. 18 – The lunch period will include a movie and pretzels & cheese dip.

Friday, Oct. 19 – The cafeteria will host “Friday Frenzy” with DJ Motiv8 – aka Jill Thompson – who will play kid-friendly music and incorporate leadership lessons as part of her performance during the lunch periods. Students will bring beach towels to enjoy a special café party to wrap up the week.

“This will be a fun week,” Haynes said. “National School Lunch Week is one of my favorites – it’s a reason to have a party in the cafeteria.”
