Owensboro Catholic High School FFA President Mattie McFadden was researching community service projects for the school’s FFA chapter for the year when she found the idea of “Socktober”, a collection of donated socks, to be something her organization could do to help the community.

“The FFA is an organization that allows for members to develop their leadership skills through agriculture projects while learning to serve others, and this philosophy goes hand-in-hand with OCS’ theme this year of servant leadership,” said FFA advisor Ashley Thomas. “As a school community, we have been focused on what it means to serve others through various service projects, led by different school organizations.”

Socktober began as an FFA service project, but the club decided to collaborate with the Student Council to include more students, according to Thomas.

And then the other Owensboro Catholic School campuses — K-3, 4-6, and the middle school —
jumped on board with the project, maximizing the number of donations.

“We know with the winter months, socks aren’t an item that people often think about donating, but is definitely a need,” Thomas said.

“Serving others is what we do as an organization and a school,” said Reisz Krampe, FFA Vice President. “Through the faith we develop at OCHS and the leadership skills in FFA, we are becoming servant leaders.”
