After a recent surge in the number of fatal incidents concerning stopped school buses, Owensboro Public Schools has teamed up with the Kentucky Department of Education to increase awareness for the safety of children who ride the bus to and from school.

Using original artwork from KDE, OPS ordered signs to be placed in high-traffic areas, as determined by school bus drivers.

“The idea for the signs was developed by transportation directors in the 3rd Region of the Kentucky Association of People Transportation,” said OPS Public Information Officer Jared Revlett. “We relied on our bus drivers to help identify areas where they have seen stop arm violations in the past and any other areas they think having one would be beneficial for raising awareness.”

Revlett said the original goal was to have signs displayed in 100 locations, including on all OPS properties.

“It is a hope to raise awareness to reduce the number of stop arm violations that are happening all across the country in recent months,” Revlett said.

For those individuals living in high-traffic areas that would like to request a sign, please call the OPS transportation department at 270-686-1074.
