Life Science Academy students will host their annual Expo event from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 25, at the Advanced Technology Center building on the campus of Owensboro Community and Technical College.
Following a short informational presentation, a variety of science booths will allow our students to showcase some of the exciting projects that have worked on this year. The Expo is open to all current eighth grade students who are interested in biology, STEM careers (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) or biomedical fields of study. Organizers said this a great opportunity for current eighth-graders and their families to see all the exciting things happening at the Life Science Academy and decide if this is the right opportunity for them as they enter high school.
The Life Science Academy currently serves students from Apollo, Daviess County, Hancock County, Owensboro Catholic and Owensboro High Schools through their program located in the Science building on OCTC’s main campus, 4800 New Hartford Road.
Some of the projects to be featured at the Expo will highlight our students’ expertise in specific anatomical systems through heart, kidney and brains dissections, as well as blood analysis. Students will also share an easy-to-understand demonstration of the role of insulin and sugar in diabetes. Visitors will also be able to learn about DNA and actually see the extraction of DNA from human cells and plant cells.
