To honor the Owensboro High School boys basketball team and cheerleaders who are headed to the KHSAA state tournament, the Forever I Love the Devils (F.I.L.D) club held a school-wide pep rally in the gym Tuesday morning. Libby Johnson and Monica Rice, co-sponsors of the student leadership and F.I.L.D. clubs, worked with students to make this an event the players would not forget.
Johnson had one surprise in store for the players that created an emotional moment for many of these young men. While sitting in folding chairs on the court, the players were each told they were going to be blindfolded and a cheerleader was going to kiss them. After they removed their blindfolds they would discover who had placed the kiss.
After each player was kissed, they removed their blindfolds to turn and find each of their mothers standing behind them in support.
Johnson said she loved calling the moms of the Red Devils and setting up the surprise.
“Each of the moms rearranged their schedule to be [at OHS] for their son and were happy to do it,” Johnson said. “They love their kids and they love this school.”
Johnson said that OHS and the district are a real family.
“It’s wonderful to see so many great relationships at work,” Johnson said.
The team and cheerleaders then boarded busses to visit each elementary school and middle school in the district as motivation before leaving for the Sweet 16 tournament.
The OHS Digital Devil created a video for the send-off that includes highlights from this season and players from the 2015 State Championship team giving a shout out to the players before they head to the state tournament.
