OPS Public Information Officer Jared Revlett said anyone who receives a call from someone collecting sponsorships or donations for the OPS athletic department should hang up immediately and, if possible, save or write down the number the call came from.

Reports of a phone scam have been circulating the last couple of days and, this time, a caller is reaching out to residents and claiming they are affiliated with the Owensboro Public Schools athletic department.

OPS Public Information Officer Jared Revlett said anyone who receives a call from someone collecting sponsorships or donations for the OPS athletic department should hang up immediately and, if possible, save or write down the number the call came from.

“Apparently someone is calling and pretending to be a project coordinator with Owensboro High School athletics, and they’re saying they’re raising money for some project,” Revlett said. “Obviously they aren’t affiliated with our school district. Our athletic department doesn’t just call people asking for money.”

Revlet said the phone calls have ranged from asking for donations to fund the athletic department to student sponsorships. After Revlett was informed of the incidents on Tuesday, he decided to get the word out via OPS’ Facebook page, urging people to not take these calls seriously, nor to fall for this phone scam.

“The number given to [Athletic Director] Todd Harper was then given to our school resource officer, and they ran it,” Revlett said. “The number showed up as a possible scam call. They’re aware of that number.”

Revlett asks that those who receive a call relating to funding for the OHS athletic department to write the number down and either contact a school official at OPS or email OPS school resource officer Rick Latanzio.

OPS has turned the number over to the Owensboro Police Department for the time being.
