The Daviess County and Owensboro Public School districts are seeking sites to provide free meals to anyone 18 years of age and younger this summer.
Examples of previous sites include local parks, vacation bible schools, local pools, day camps and more. Requirements are that locations justify need and are open to all children. Meals must be consumed on-site and recipients must be 18 years of age or younger.
“This program provides a unique opportunity for us to provide meals to those in our community who may not have access to nutritious meals during the summer months,” said Kaitlyn Blankendaal, Food Service Coordinator for Owensboro Public Schools. “The goal is to reach as many kids as possible, we just need to know where to go in order to provide those meals.”
This service is provided as a part of the USDA Kids Eat Summer Food Service Program. The Summer Food Service Program allows both districts to ensure that children continue to receive nutritious meals when school is not in session. Nationwide, this program serves more than 200 million free meals to anyone under the age of 18 at any approved site at no cost to the participant.
DCPS food services director Lisa Sims said, “As food service professionals, the Summer Feeding Program is close to our hearts because it allows us to continue providing delicious, nutritious meals to children in the summer months.”
