The Daviess County Panthers will take on the Owensboro Red Devils Friday at Reid Stadium, but the competition will extend further than the football field.

Owensboro High School’s National Honor Society chapter members have challenged Daviess County High School’s NHS chapter to a Community Spirit Competition to collect items for Oasis Women’s Shelter.

“Oasis approached us about an immediate need for cleaning supplies, hygiene items, as well as socks and underwear,” said Lori Thurman, NHS sponsor at OHS. “I knew a school drive could result in a few hundred items, but the need is so great that we wanted to do more.”

Bayli Stone, NHS sponsor at DCHS, said that both schools will have a truck parked at the gated entrance to the game, one for OHS and one for DCHS. The school’s truck filled with the most items will win the competition.

“The officers and sponsors of both chapters of NHS believe strongly in giving back to our community,” Thurman said.

The winning school will receive a spirit stick made by Trophy House, but more importantly, they will have the bragging rights for the service project.

“We hope the football game spirit competition will meet that need for the shelter and become a tradition that we carry over to the OHS versus DCHS basketball game at OHS,” Thurman said. “We would love to make this a new tradition and continue next year during our football game and one of the basketball games.”

Anyone can donate by bringing items to each school and the game. The shelter is in need of hygiene and cleaning products, and the most needed items include feminine products, socks, coats, cleaning supplies and under garments.

The game is Sept. 20 at 7 p.m. at DCHS’ Reid Stadium.
