The Daviess County Public Schools Board of Education will celebrate the legacy of former Highland Elementary School principal Anita Newman with a dedication ceremony renaming the front driveway of the school in her honor.

“‘Anita Newman Way’ will be a permanent reminder of this amazing educator’s dedication to guiding students along the way of lifelong learning and success,” DCPS said in a press release last week.

The ceremony will begin at 3 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 5, in the HES gymnasium and will include the unveiling of the sign that will be placed along the main entrance of the school, located at 2909 Kentucky 54.

Anita Newman served the Daviess County Public Schools district for 36 years, retiring in June 2012. She began her career as an elementary teacher at Masonville Elementary School in 1971. She joined Highland as a teacher in 1978 and taught there for 10 years accepting the role of principal at Utica Elementary School in 1988. She returned to Highland as principal in 1989.

Under her leadership, Highland Elementary School earned numerous recognitions and rewards, including designation as a Kentucky Pacesetter School for several years and being named a National Blue Ribbon School in 2008.

Newman is a graduate of Kentucky Wesleyan College, where she earned a bachelor of arts degree. She completed her master’s degree at Western Kentucky University, where she also earned her Rank I in administration and supervision certificates. KWC honored Newman’s service and contributions to education in 2008 by presenting her the KWC Alumni Achievement Award.

The dedication ceremony is open to all friends and former colleagues. Light refreshments will be served following the program, which will feature music by the Highland Hornet Choir.
