Halloween festivities aren’t quite the same as normal, but local schools are doing their best to allow students to have some fun this year. In a pair of events Tuesday, students donned all manner of costumes and participated in socially distanced trick-or-treating at their respective schools.

At Burns Elementary, families were invited to the playground, where stations to hand out candy were spread out along the walking path. Families entered one at a time, and the line stretched all the way to the opposite end of the school building.

“We’re very excited to host a Trick-or-Treat night,” said BES Principal Heather Newman. “It’s alway a family and a staff favorite. We were creative with our thinking and were able to host something outside with all the safety guidelines in place.”

With the City and other organizations cancelling many of the public Trunk-or-Treat events, Newman was happy the school could still hold something for their students.

“I think this just brings back a little piece of normalcy because the kids are used to trick-or-treating,” she said. “We want school to be about learning, but it also has to have some fun in it as well. I think this brings that back to them.”

Similarly, the staff at Cravens Elementary had to alter their annual event.

“Six years ago we started a Trunk-or-Treat that was community-wide,” said CES Principal Courtney Inklebarger. “We’d set up in the front loop and we’d play music and the kids would come through. It’s always one of their favorite things to do. Since we can’t host those kinds of events right now, we just wanted to do something special for them.”

Schools in both the Daviess County and Owensboro districts have held other events and will continue to do so this week, though they are not being advertised because they are closed to the public for safety reasons.
